So after reading this article today: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

... I realized that I don't really have a good "baby announcement" plan of my own. We are likely going to make that announcement later this week to the greater public, so what other ideas can you guys come up with?

(Disclaimer - my wife and I have a 3yo daughter. And a cozy coupe with a trailer. And the only guy I personally know who read Oppo or Jalopnik just found out yesterday. And no, I can't guarantee I will do any of the suggestions!)

So.. gearhead / jalop baby announcement ideas. Go!

I thought of a joke but it would be too horrible and offensive to say here. It's not even that bad, it's just depressing.

I was talking about this with the wife earlier, and I just don't get why you'd do a baby announcement. My take is that anyone you chat to will know about it well before it happens, and you'll get the pleasure of telling them one by one, and anyone you don't talk to in six months doesn't deserve an announcement anyway - they can find out when they find out. Can you explain this to me in man terms?

For our first baby, we bought a bunch of blank jigsaw puzzles from a craft store and then drew messages and pictures that suggested we were expecting. These were mailed to family with no explanation or other clues, and then we waited. It was a lot of fun - some people got it right away, others called and asked "what's this?" without even trying the puzzle. All-in-all, it was fun.

Yeah, I think we all know my level of involvement up to this point. I think the impressive part isn't the physical accomplishment so much as the social achievement that I've convinced a woman to mate with me (a second time, at that). And it worked!

The first time around, I did actually have a friend say "nice job with your dick." So there's that.

It's true, there's no particularly good reason for an announcement, other than some self-indulgent excuse for attention. People do get excited, though, so I understand the desire to play it up when you get the chance.

The only logical function it serves is to control the timing so that other family members/friends don't find out through the grapevine. It's all well and good to plan on telling people as you see or talk to them, but in reality, many of them wouldn't actually hear it from you, because people tend to gossip. Hearing it from the source has significance to some people.
